Manos Hadjidakis & Grigoris Bithikotsis

Lilacs from the dead land - Transcription for small orchestra (1961). A selection of rebetiko songs, orchestrated in such a way as to convey the tragic atmosphere of 1945. This is the third time that the composer applies himself to the rebetiko song.
In those days (1945), the bouzouki was played in small, unpretentious places, devoid of bright neon lights, big stars and high-falutin names. These places did not pose as "Greek" to attract tourists, but functioned modestly, often lit by oil lamps only, and unfolded with amazing strength longings, experiences and passions truly Greek ...Today, after twenty years, I decided to make this record, a sort of prayer. And I think that I succeeded to revive all that musical material stored for so long inside me, while, at the sane time, expressing the youthful sensitivity of a modern Greek steeped in tradition, coupled with the delicate spring atmosphere of Good Friday…

Transcription of fifteen songs for piano, harp, two guitars and contrabass (1964).
Manos Hadjidakis, piano. Yerassimos Miliaressis and Dimitris Fambas, guitars.
Aliki Krithari, harp.
Andreas Roussakis, contrabass.
A Vesper signifies veneration of the sun as it roams susceptible over the city, filled with memories of past years, until, finally, it goes off to sleep leaving around echoes of light, an apocalyptic spirit, and a most delicate fragrance of love.
With FIFTEEN VESPERS, I am able to gather my scattered sensibility and present it to you just as it was born, on a solid basis, whereby it cannot be commercialized or marred. ..

BLOOD WEDDING Op. 3 (1947-48). by Federico Garcia Lorca
Music and songs for the play staged by the Art Theatre at the Aliki Theatre.
Translation by Nikos Gatsos.
Stage direction by Karolos Koun.
Sets and costumes by Yannis Tsarouhis.
In the leading roles Vassilis Diamantopoulos, Vasso Metaxa and Elli Lambetti.
The play, with new musical arrangements by the composer, was again produced in 1970 by the Minotis and Paxinou Theatre Company at the Katina Paxinou Theatre.
Stage direction by Alexis Minotis.
Scenery by Vassilis Vassilliadis.
Costumes by Elli Solomonidou-Balanou.
Choreography by Maria Hors.
The last musical arrangernents for this play were effected in 1980, when the latter was performed by the Greek National Theatre. Stage direction by Alexis Solomos.
Finally, in 1991, the music was transcribed for piano and cello by Manos Hadjidakis.
Nikos Gatsos began translating BLOOD WEDDING during the German occupation and all of us, his friends, shared his difficulties, his uncertainties, to do with each verse, each single word, but also those wonderful moments when the finished verses reached our ears as magical and novel sounds, precious diamonds to our hearts, unique gems for Greek literature. It never crossed our minds at the time that our friend’s endeavour would surpass the bounds of momentary emotion and achieve historical significance...
...The time I was writing the music for BLOOD WEDDING, I first spoke to the Athenian public, in this very theatre, about the modern folk song: the rebetiko. And just as Gatsos wanted to transplant Spanish prosody in the poetic folk rhythms of our language, so did I strive to extend these rhythms to reach the eternal sources of modern Greek sensibility.

A TALE WITH NO NAME Op. 15 (1959-60).by Iakovos Kambanellis
A cycle of songs written for the homonymous play by Iakovos Kambanellis, first performed in October 1959 by the New Theatre, and directed by Vassilis Diamantopoulos.
Scenery by Yorgos Vakalo.
The play is based on the book of the same name by Penelope Delta.
The lyrics for the eight songs were written by Kambanellis.
Recorded: October 1965.
Vocals: Lakis Pappas.
The songs MOTHER DEAR and KYR-MIHALIS were also written for this play, but they were presented in the musical STREET OF DREAMS (1962), and recorded for the first time along with the other songs in the show.
...The play is divided in three acts and nine scenes, which are connected by songs. These songs are an integral part of the play. They all share a style of narrative, folk-like lyricism, but their lyrics are filled with ingenuity, bitterness, persistence, hope and harsh realizations. They are all used as prologues or epilogues for each act or scene, a kind of chorus, binding them together with music...

BIRDS was a theatrical spectacle with songs, dances, clowns, red velvet round the ring, cardboard planets with sequins and white feathers on the backs of actors wearing blue jeans. I had met Manos Hadjidakis in Athens. As everyone else, I, too, was familiar with the success of his composition in Dasin΄s film "Never on Sunday". He wasn΄t pleased that this particular song had made him famous. In Athens, he directed an orchestra akin to Espace Musical of Boulez in Paris. He had set Lorca΄s poems to music. He had composed works of which one, at least, is a masterpiece : "Street of Dreams". We agreed to collaborate...
